Bryan C. Shartle is a co-managing partner of the Firm and helps oversee the operations, strategy, and continued growth of its 11 offices nationwide. He is also a leader of the Firm’s Consumer Defense, Bankruptcy, Commercial Litigation, and Appellate Practice Sections.
Bryan focuses his practice on representing clients in the financial services industry, including collection agencies, creditors, banks, debt buyers, student loan servicers, and companies subject to telemarketing regulations. He has extensive experience defending consumer litigation involving the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and a wide range of state consumer protection laws.
Known for his experience in consumer litigation, Bryan has served as lead counsel in several significant decisions affecting the financial services industry. Clients regularly retain him to handle consumer cases, arbitrations, and complex disputes throughout the United States. He also serves as approved counsel for several large insurance companies.
After earning his J.D. from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at Louisiana State University in 2001, Bryan served as a law clerk to The Honorable Justice Jeannette Theriot Knoll of the Louisiana Supreme Court. While in law school, he was one of a select group of students whose work was published in the Louisiana Law Review. Following his clerkship, Bryan joined the Firm and helped build its consumer defense practice into a nationally recognized practice group dedicated to representing the financial services industry.
Bryan has particular experience in complex litigation and consumer class actions. He has defended thousands of individual and class action lawsuits involving substantial potential exposure, assisted clients with class-wide settlements, and handled matters involving class certification, multidistrict litigation, and coordinated proceedings. In one notable role, he served as coordinating counsel for more than 150 consumer-related lawsuits filed in California state court.
In addition to litigation, Bryan advises clients on compliance, regulatory, employment, licensing, bankruptcy, commercial litigation, and appellate matters. He has represented clients in CFPB readiness assessments and enforcement actions and regularly counsels financial services companies on the compliance, regulatory, employment, and licensing issues that affect their businesses.
Bryan also has significant bankruptcy, commercial litigation, and appellate experience. He has represented clients in appeals before nine of the 13 federal circuit courts of appeals, as well as before the United States Supreme Court.
A frequent speaker and author, Bryan regularly presents for ACA International and RMA International, both leading trade organizations for credit and collection professionals. He has spoken at conferences across the country and frequently publishes and edits articles and client alerts through the Firm. Bryan has also served as ACA International’s Louisiana MAP State Chair Representative and has been retained by trade organizations to assist with litigation involving important industry issues. He is a member of the Legal Advisory Board for the Consumer Relations Consortium.
Outside the office, Bryan enjoys staying active, traveling, and spending time outdoors. His recent adventures include trekking to Everest Base Camp in Tibet and Machu Picchu in Peru; climbing Mount Rainier in Washington, Mount Elbert in Colorado, Mount Whitney in California, and Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania; and completing the “O” Circuit in Torres del Paine in Chile. This year, Bryan will be trekking in Morocco and the Atlas Mountains to Sumit Jbel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa.
