The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said Thursday in a press release it will delay its annual collection of EEO-1 data from businesses with 100 or more workers because of the COVID-19 public health emergency.  The EEOC also said it will similarly push back its collection of EEO-3 and EEO-5 surveys.

The EEO-1 report contains Component 1 data, which seeks demographic information from employers on race, gender, and ethnicity by job category.  The EEO-3 survey requires certain local unions to submit labor force demographic data, and the EEO-5 survey seeks demographic information from public elementary and secondary school districts.

In a Federal Register notice, the EEOC said, "In light of the [COVID-19] public health emergency, and consistent with delays in federal reporting requirements across the government and other actions taken to relieve employers of unnecessary burdens during this crisis, the Commission is delaying the anticipated opening of the 2019 EEO-1 Component 1 and the 2020 EEO-3 and EEO-5 Data Collections to a time when the agency anticipates that filers will have resumed more normal operations."

The EEOC now expects to start collecting EEO-1 data from employers for both 2019 and 2020 starting in March 2021, pending approval from the White House's Office of Management and Budget. The EEOC said it will inform businesses of exact dates at a later time.
